Artificial Intelligence and Critical Thinking in University Students: A Honduran Perspective

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Critical Thinking (CT) in education has become a transformative force shaping how students learn, analyze, and engage with information. A recent study titled “Artificial Intelligence and Critical Thinking in University Students”, published in the Journal of Biomedical Research & Environmental Sciences, offers vital insights into how students in Honduras perceive and apply these concepts in academic settings.

๐Ÿ” Study Overview

Conducted across various public and private universities in Choluteca, Honduras, this research surveyed 236 students to assess:

  • Their familiarity with AI technologies
  • Their ability to engage in critical analysis
  • The intersection of these competencies in academic contexts

The study employed a structured questionnaire addressing both sociodemographic data and specific questions related to CT and AI.

๐ŸŽ“ Key Findings

  • CT Skills: Many students exhibit basic critical thinking traits like questioning media narratives and seeking evidence. However, few demonstrate deep analytical skills such as data validation or argument construction with scientific evidence.
  • AI Awareness: While most participants are aware of basic AI applications like virtual assistants and recommendation systems, detailed knowledge (e.g., machine learning algorithms or data privacy concerns) remains limited.
  • Academic Use of AI: A significant number of students report using AI tools (e.g., chatbots, essay generators), indicating that AI is becoming embedded in academic work.

๐Ÿง  Educational Implications

The study concludes that although students are not entirely unfamiliar with AI, critical judgment needs to be systematically developed from secondary to tertiary education. As AI tools become more prevalent, institutions must:

  • Emphasize reflective learning strategies
  • Offer AI literacy programs
  • Train educators to integrate ethical AI use into curricula
